Old Kona Airport, Big Island, HI

Rating (1 Worst / 5 Best) – 3-1/2

This dive is simple to access from the parking area and a good dive yet the water access can be tough, depending on the wave conditions. This would get a higher rating on calm wave days.

The dive location is located at the north end of Kailua Park and at the very end of the old airport runway strip. Access is just north of Kuakini Hwy. and Makala Blvd. intersection (just west of Target Dept. store). The Maps actually show that Kuakini Hwy. extends through the Kailua Park and along the old runway.

This is known as a dependable diving spot since there is always a large number fish at the entry point with lots of parking space nearby and open access to the water.

The underwater environment consists of some coral clusters on the left side of the dive site with a number of coral swim-thrus. The right side of the dive area is dense coral with lots of opportunity to see fish, eels and other creatures that typically hang-out in the coral.

Kailua Park is maintained by the City, fairly clean and has restroom areas and garbage bins. The area in front of the entry is a sandy beach area where you can place chairs and towels if you have someone you trust to make sure they are watched.

This dive can be for beginners if the water conditions are calm. Once you get past the first 20 feet from shore and into water being 3 to 4 feet deep, you can easily drop into the water and swim along the surface to the drop off area or dive out in the shallow water.

The Good:

  • Access to the entry point is a short walk to parking areas;
  • Parking is abundant. Since the parking area is the old airport runway strip, there is unlimited areas around the perimeter of the runways to park and down the center of the runway;
  • Being in a City Park area, there are public restrooms nearby where you can shower, change and use the toilet before and after your dives. Just don’t rely on them being totally clean, depending on when they were last cleaned by the City;
  • Since this area is well-used by the local residents for jogging, walking and relaxing at the beach areas, there is typically quite a few people in the area to assist in the case of an emergency. There is little chance you will not have someone within visible or audible range unless you dive during really early or late hours of the day;
  • The dive site is located just north of the Kailua-Kona tourist area which means close proximity if you are staying in a hotel or residence near this popular area.

The Bad:

  • The water access can be tough to navigate if there are a lot of waves. Be careful walking over the rocks in the shallow areas upon entering this site;
  • On days where there are larger waves, there can also be a chance of strong surge with an undertow which can make it difficult to get back in to shore if you are not a strong swimmer.

The Okay:

  • The coral here is fairly abundant yet a little beaten up since the waves along this area can be pretty rough and harsh on the coral, especially in the more shallow waters.

Big Island Weather

Like all shore dives, don’t leave anything of value within visible view from outside. Although there are lots of honest people in Hawaii, the access to public restrooms with shower make this an attractive area for some of the less-prosperous individuals in the area. A simple thing such as a watch or jewelry sitting on the car seat may mean a meal for an individual who has not eaten in a few days.

When dropping down to the sand level and more open areas of this site, make note of the coral features as you leave the drop-off area so you come back to this exact point. This makes it easier and less stressful knowing you are back at the entry point and can reduce the chance of having to surface to check your location prior to swimming into the shallows.

If navigation is not your strong feature, you may want to take an extra 2-lb weight with you and leave it on the sand at the entry point so you know exactly where to come back to.

If you are looking for a good check-out dive location and are staying in a hotel or rental property close to this location, this can be an excellent first dive if the water conditions are calm.
